My 4 sisters and myself chose Frederickburg VA  this past November 8th thru 11 to meet for our sister reunion. A time we started since our Mother passed away. It was her request that we stay close even though we were in several different states.
While we were visiting I pick up your local Front Porch Newspaper. I was quite impressed with the news, INTERESTING. May God Continue to bless you for sharing with others.

The Front Porch represents all that is right with Fredericksburg. We want to recognize the good will that you and Arch Di Peppe have created with the fund drive for Jackson. It is so rewarding to be part of a community that continually reaches out and gets involved.
We are overwhelmed with the gratitude shown by so many people. Jackson adds another dimension to all of our lives and it is great to see how many people appreciate what a pet companion can mean to someone. Jake and Jackson’s relationship is special but all animal lovers know what that bond is all about.
The Front Porch, Arch and you make us thankful we live in Fredericksburg.

Thank you for writing such a wonderful article on my sister!  [Spotlight on Leanne Seitzinger, December 2007] She is a great young woman.  I rarely get to see her do passes or watch her coach the younger children.  So to read such a great article about her just reinforces the vision I have of my little sister.

Also, Good Luck to your daughter with her training and competitions!

Thank you again!

Thanks again for recognizing our efforts for Amaya Williams [“All American Heart” -- On the Porch, September 2007]… [and] for the support you've provided to Don [Wingate] and Jake [Walther] as well. You both truly have an "All American Heart".

I just took a look at the December issue online and I see that your fund raising goals are almost complete for Jake.  Mike and I are putting checks in the mail to do our part.  Please pass them along to Jake in honor of “Seaweed”.  Papa loved that dog.

I’ve been meaning to send you a note since I read this month’s On the Porch (November 2007, “Stamina”)… First, thank you for this calming, encouraging presence, the paper itself, as it gives this road-weary, rootless, retired SEAL a sense of having a hometown. I want to make that sense into reality, and my family and I love Fredericksburg. Thanks.

I have been thinking of the wonderful "feeling" experience of being at your home [FP's 10th anniversary celebration], surrounded by your friends and so many of mine and such peaceful open space. I got the feeling of a cell with all the interesting "stuff" surrounding the nucleus. Metaphorically you could say that you and Virginia, sitting in your house thinking and planning "The Front Porch" are the nucleus and that all of us are the skin of the cell! For me, as I seem to be in the phase of being a student of energy, I see you both as a facilitator for all of Fredericksburg to be a part of a larger theme of unity and love.

Reading about your Downtown Historic District problems in the Citizen‘s Voice columns of late, I can forewarn you to tighten up your ordinances and regulations. Last year I moved back to my home state of North Carolina. Since that time, I have never stopped missing Fredericksburg, my home, garden, friends, church family at St. George's, and volunteer activities. However, gratefully, I can stay in contact through the FRONT PORCH online.
When I moved to Fredericksburg in 1994, your publication was one of the first connections I made. After 19 years in Northern Virginia, I was used to very impersonal, uninteresting local newspapers that arrived in the mail. What a delight it was to sit down that first time to read the FP. Over the years, I remember vividly reading Jo Middleton's columns and laughing out loud--particularly one from long ago that she wrote about someone commuting to DC--something I lived daily. I wish I had kept that column to read again now. I also loved reading Sandra Regelbrugge's "About Town" each month and could hear her speak as I read. Her expressions are as priceless as she is! "The Best of the "Burg" was also terrific. So many other articles were greatly enjoyed, and the advertisements led me to many neat places, stores, "nooks and crannies," and helped me learn my way around town. My undoing was spending so much time in the antique shops!
All the best to you and your staff. Keep up the good work so that those of us who miss the 'Burg so much may stay connected.

comments:   Dear Rob, I'm at the computer and just read about Popcorn's death (Farewells, On the Porch, Feb. 2006) and wanted to extend my sympathy. I've always loved his picture in Front Porch, since we, too, own a wheaten Cairn terrier, a barky, feisty, loyal, beloved member of our family. In January, my son and I were at Soup & Taco and I glimpsed a woman, girl and Cairn terrier I was sure belonged to you -- I even hoped I'd catch up with them, but they were walking too quickly. We laughed when the little dog barked, because he sounded so much like our Webster& But that couldn't have been Popcorn& That was only a few weeks ago& Just another Front Porch fan. I'm looking at Popcorn's photo right now, as Webster tears around the house barking his crazy head off at the big dogs walking past the house. My sympathies again.

comments:   Today is truly a sad day as I just read about the passing of one of our local gems, Stafford County Sun and Fredericksburg Front Porch columnist Derval Brown. Apparently, it has been a few weeks since this lovely woman succumbed to her illness and I made this belated discovery while searching the Internet for some of her most recent work. Unfortunately, there will be no more commentaries to read, or opportunities to share in her wonderful wit and candor. Thankfully, we will always have her memory to cherish. My first introduction to Derval was pretty self-centered on my part. When my first book on Stonewall Jackson was released, I sent her a complimentary copy and a sappy letter begging for a review. Being the local author's go-to-girl for honest insight and analysis, I had always enjoyed her critiques in the Front Porch and was anxious to get my book out there by using her talents as a journalistic springboard. My material was not the norm for Derval, but I took a chance anyway. Not only did she take the time to read and review my book, she also went above and beyond the call of duty and phoned me up on several occasions to discuss her own thoughts on the subject. Each time, our conversations drifted beyond the subject matter, as she spared no words in telling me that this particular topic provided a unique challenge for her. An adamant pacifist, Derval did not support any war (regardless of the time and place) and was not moved by desperate charges and violent victories. It was not the kind of thing a budding Civil War historian wanted to hear. However, she agreed to give it a try and took the time out of her busy schedule to read a biography on one of the fiercest warriors in military history. She then found a way to graciously compliment my work without compromising her own convictions. Derval later explained to me that it wasn't dignified (in her mind) to promote or glorify the act of war, but that she appreciated the unique approach I used in portraying Jackson as a Christian first and a soldier second. It turned out to be one of my favorite reviews and I still treasure her praise. I had planned to send her copies of my other books, but I have missed that opportunity. Unfortunately, I was anticipating our phone discussions more than her review and looked forward to debating the battlefield heroics of JEB Stuart. Perhaps that argument is still to come - at another time - in a much better place. Although it was very depressing to discover her passing, I did find comfort in the countless tributes that were posted online by her colleagues and peers. Ironically, it is the reviewer herself who is now receiving rave reviews and they are all well deserved. Those of us that were lucky enough to know Derval were truly blessed by her presence and I hope that her legacy will live on in the archived pages of those publications that she worked for. Derval Brown was a great writer, but more importantly, she was a great lady. Thank you Derval. Fredericksburg will miss you, but we will not forget you. Michael Aubrecht Spotsylvania

Last Saturday we were talking about a new project which I have started and wondered if you might be interested in doing an article about us ? We are a local business and are currently involved in manufacturing and marketing our new product specifically for front porches. we have recieved our patent pending status and are now ready to present our product to the public. What we are doing is making brackets for front porches as well as spandrels. The unusual part of this is that no one has ever thought of building these items out of stained glass before . Our cost is not much higher than that of conventional spandrels and brackets and our brackets are made with a maintenance free vinyl frame so theres never any need for painting. As most porch trim is done in white our stock color is is white ,but we can accommodate custom colors as well . We would be happy to meet with you and have you look at our product Call 899-5779 for contact

comments:   Letter to the editor, I love the back roads of Fredericksburg. This area is well known by the metropolitan DC area for bilking. The summer was hot and I was waiting for the fall weather to bike the commuting path of Hartwood Road and Curtis Park. With the school activities calling and the local winery open for visitation this area is well traveled. Best of all, with the cost of gas, it just seems refreshing to hop on the 'ol bike for a ride. Most drivers of this area are familiar with the activity of the community and they drive at controlled speeds. Yesterday, I packed up my bike gear with head and back lighting and set off to an evening activity. With the days getting shorter, I found myself coming home in the dark, with one aspect I had forgotten - no marked roads. I had enough head light to overcome this concern, but what I also forgot is everyone else on the road could not see the road limits and they traveled with brights. At first the bright lights did not cause much concern. However there are bright lights and then there are bright bright lights in the category of close to illegal. Eventually I ran into one of those bright bright lights which shone me right off the road into a ditch. The spray of light was so bright, I could not see my front mounted light at my handle bars. Needless to say, I broke my headlight and the trip was over, at least for that day. I plan to continue to bike as do Europeans. A ditch is not the worst out-come of an evening. The simple remedy would be marked roads, so drivers did not have to force their brights on. We might even see the fall and spring packed with the legendary bikers from all areas. For our area, commuting is what we do best and the choice to bike is a valuable one.

comments:   Thank you for sharing the story of "Barbara & Tibby: A Love Story - In The Face of Hate" with your readers [April On the Porch]. Thank you for using your voice to speak out on behalf of those too afraid to speak. Thank you for provoking thought and asking tough questions. Barbara and Tibby left town yesterday, April 4. Fredericksburg will never be the same as far as I'm concerned. I'm so grateful to these two women for their courage and strength to speak on camera, for they provide a very real glimpse into the misunderstood "lifestyle" of GLBT America. They have helped to put a face on the law, on oppression and its consequences. Not many people know this, but Legislators in Virginia are now planning to take §2045.3 a step further by writing discrimination into the STATE CONSTITUTION (HJ586/SJ337). This proposed amendment was approved by both houses -with strong majorities- in Richmond, February 2005. In order to amend the constitution, an identical version of the proposed measure must pass in the 2006 session before going to a state-wide voter referendum, possibly in the fall of 2006. These are difficult times. I read your piece today and felt a sense of hope - that Barbara & Tibby's story, by being shared, can and will open hearts and minds. comments:   I feel a need to comment on Rob's column about Suzanne Moe's film. Thank you for doing that, both of you. I remember, years ago, when your state boasted that "Virginia is for Lovers". Even then, it was well known that not all lovers were welcome in Virginia, and friends in Washington, who knew more about it than I, used to make rude jokes. But this new legislation is an afront to everyone, in Virginia or elsewhere. It's an ugly throwback to a nastier time, and will presumably have to be sheepishly withdrawn at some future date, but not before you lose too many good citizens like the couple in Suzanne's film. I wish them well, wherever they travel to, I thank Suzanne for her courage, determination and artistic integrity, and I thank you, Rob, for bringing this story to our attention.

comments:   HI, Rob and Virginia-Thank you again for the honor of Person of the Year! I wanted to share a brief update with you about the soon to be orphans from last year's Family Hope Program as well as an update on Sonia, the little girl you helped find a family for with your article in April 2004: The first children who had their adoptions completed came home in January-a pair of sisters who now call Aquia Harbor in North Stafford home. On MOnday, March 21st 4 more children ranging in age from just 8-11 had their adoption court hearings in St. Petersburg, Russia. Another set of 6 children will have their adoptions completed in April and then there are 4 more children whose adoptions should be completed before the end of the school year. With the incredible success of the program it is important to recognize that without the gift of coming here these children have less than a 1% chance of ever finding a family simply because of their age, but coming here to Stafford and Fredericksburg, increases their odds to 90%+!!!! Of course, the Front Porch gives these children a voice that is able to touch the hearts of readers who may go on to become adoptive parents or assist in some other way. Their have been many struggles as I try to help these children, and it is truly hard to feel that I have made a difference when there are literally millions of children still waiting. Thanks in large part to you and the Front Porch a small tiny segment of these children are able to find the families that they need to love and cherish them. I am just beginning the planning stages for the 2005 program, so if any of your readers would like to host a child this summer, and consider making them a permanent member of their family have them contact me directly at my email address. Thanks! Joyce Schaller
Editor's Note:   Joyce, It was great meeting you and your family last night. We are proud to be a part of your God-sent efforts. Congratulations again on your award. Rob, Virginia & Alexis (born Aug. 23, 1996 in Achinsk, Siberia)

comments:   Dear Front Porch, The Fredericksburg area as we know it; is changing from farm land to back yard neighborhoods. When reading about the struggles of the "Crows Nest" and other clippings like "Animal Rights is a hokey idea"; published 3/30/2004, I realize that I am caught in the middle of a transitional culture. Here is my story: Yesterday, (1/30/05) at 12:30, my neighbor shot and hurt a dog from his property. He has chickens and ducks and has been known to kill dogs upon his word of defending his hobby. His back yard shooting range at his pond, points into my back yard. He claims he will shoot a dog if it attacks his birds. I hear gun shots year round, at times without the stress of bird call. Police says he has the right to protect his birds if attacked. We have little trust in hear-say for the need to shoot as often as he does. At times we hear gun shot on a weekly basis. We are worried because we hear bullets over-head at times when we are in my back yard. We have called the authority but have not gotten a response other than reports collected. This man has killed multiple dogs and is known to also kill dogs during hunting time. It is deep in winter now and I saw fox prints. My neighbor is mad because he lost perhaps a bird. Yesterday I captured foot prints of a fox in the snow with my camera on the edge of his property line. We have lived at our address for 4 years. Our neighborhood is mixed with some residents who have lived here all their life. The 5 - 30 acre lots are changing to 3 - 5 acre lots. There is no fense line between my neighbors yard and mine, The hobby farm runs free and in the summer the chickens and ducks search for food on our property and beyond. This has not been much of a concern to us until yesterday when our neighbor complained about the unleashed stray dogs seen crossing our property after he shot one. At the time of the shooting, our dog was pended up. Our neighbor described the dogs attacking his birds as two beagles. Our dog just happens to be a beagle. We have a video tape of our dog around our pond of ducks to prove if needed, she does not kill or hurt fowl. Gun violence and animal rights have a twisted way of fate. Where do I weigh in? Perhaps readers have advice to our situation? Sincerely, Kristin Maxson
Editor's Note:   Dear Kristen: The situation, as you describe it, seems to be a public safety issue. If the law enforcement in your area has not responded satisfactorily to your concerns, perhaps your elected officials will. I am assuming you live in a county within this region. You have an elected supervisor for your part of the county. I would contact him or her and tell your story in detail. Stafford and Spotsylvania Counties have web sites with the names and jurisdictions of the supervisors and individual email addresses at which to contact them. Please keep us informed as you proceed. comments:   Dear Rob, Many thanks for interviewing me for your September "Companions... Canine, feline... human" column. As always, I'm delighted to talk about the SPCA of Fredericksburg's upcoming Capital Campaign to raise funds for a new improved (and expanded!) animal care facility. So far the interview has generated several requests from the public for additional information as well as one very generous contribution from a caring, cat-loving Fredericksburger. To learn more about donor opportunities, please contact the shelter at 540.373.9008 or me directly at HopeCTarr.aol.com (and put SPCA Capital Campaign in the email subject header). Again, thanks for all you do to make Fredericksburg the caring, compassionate community I'm proud to call home. Warm Wishes, Hope Tarr Building Committee Chair SPCA of Fredericksburg
Editor's Note:   We thank Joan C. Frey, a former SPCA Board member, for the following correction: Sept. 1, 1990 was the Grand Opening of the metal building (which houses dogs and cats) in the rear of the shelter. Prior to this, the brick building -- now the office in front -- was "the Cat house" and dogs were in a shed out back. The shelter started in the brick building in 1967, not 1945, says Ms. Frey

comments:   Your story of Arch DiPeppe and the "Xtreme Make-over" reminded me of an incident more than 40 years ago involving another of my favorite people. I was walking along Kenmore Avenue heading home from a day in second or third grade at Maury School when a car that looked exactly like my family's Chevrolet station wagon pulled up beside me. The door opened and the lady behind the wheel leaned over to ask, "Would you like a ride home?" I took off running and didn't stop until I was safe in our house. My mother never went to a beauty parlor again.

comments:   Dear Rob: Every day we all get up and get ready for work. We rush around the house, get in the car and the race begins. We go through the day finish and get back in the car and race home. On the way we often take a little time to reflect on our day, often we just shrug our shoulders and thank GOD we made it. But every now and then we get to do our jobs well, very well and our drive home goes a little slower and we reflect a little deeper; we are so very proud of ourselves that we did our job great today. I did that this month when you and Arch gave me the opportunity to do what I love to do, MY JOB [Arch Di Peppe's "Xtreme Make-over"]. You know you have been successful when your client looks in the mirror and has a twinkle in his eye and pep in his step. I do believe that the eyes are truly the mirror to the soul and Arch had big twinkles. He liked what he saw and I did my job. So that night, I drove home, thanked GOD and the both of you for getting to do what I love, and for having a day where I loved what I did! Thanks, Alley Door Hair Studio

comments:   Hey Rob & Virginia, I got a call from a woman in British Columbia Canada the day the August Front Porch came out with my article on Carnival Glass. She read it online at Frontporchfredericksburg.com and called right away to ask for an appraisal! We're everywhere! Take care.
Editor's Note:   Arch Di Peppe writes our antiques & collectibles appraisal column, What's It Worth?, which lists his business phone number.

I have heard from old friends who also attended Lawrence Pre-School -- it seems the 'Burg is still full of us, all carrying fond memories. I greatly appreciate you giving me the opportunity to share my experiences with the Front Porch readers. Wishing you all the best.
Editor's Note:   Susan Spears wrote "A 'Native' Finds Home" for our Citizens Voice column last month. She and her husband Richard live with their Lab Mix "Eddie" in the College Terrace neighborhood.

comments:   Dear Editor, As I pushed open the front door a few days ago, scattered among all the letters and catalogs were 2 copies (not my usual 1) of the August issue of Front Porch. Hmmm, I thought... Sandy must have accidentally pushed 2 copies through the slot! You see, not only does Sandy keep up with the "goings on" about town (About Town by Sandra), she personally delivers them to our neighborhood. Thank you, Sandy! When I picked up the issues, a big smile crossed my face; staring back at me was our porch! The cover picture of the porch is just beautiful (Great job, Archer [cover photographer Arch Di Peppe]). I was certainly surprised and pleased. For a whole month I won't be trying to guess whose porch that is on the cover. You see, half the fun of the Front Porch is trying to figure where the porch is! David and I are honored to grace your cover. Thank you, "213" Princess Anne Street

comments:   Dear Rob & Virginia, I just opened my August Front Porch and saw the nice pet article (Companions). Thanks so much for your kind words about my work on the [spay-neuter] stamp project, and what an honor to be paired with local hero Virginia Kinchloe... Likewise, I know all of us connected with the F'sburg SPCA appreciated the kind words. The shelter staff there are some of the most compassionate and dedicated people I've ever had the privilege to know or work with. Seeing the many mini-miracles they accomplish every day in a building that is beyond outdated is truly humbling. At the same time, both they and the animals deserve so much more... Fredericksburg
Editor's Note:   Hope Tarr is on the Board of Directors of the Fredericksburg SPCA and chairs the building committee for the new shelter (see Companions in this issue).

comments:   Dear Kitty, Virginia & Rob, You cannot begin to imagine my surprise when I started reading Kitty Farley's article in the June Fpf, "A Quiet Historic Preservationist," and it was all about moi! I had missed "Legacies" in the sidebar on the cover, and in Rob's opening column, which would have given me clues. It brought a tear to my eye, and I cannot thank you enough for the very kind portrayal of an ordinary individual who looks back on my 12 years at HFFI as a labor of love. My only critical remark is for the use of "Quiet." Just ask Bob Stout if I have ever been quiet! I must add that a few people, when reading the article, thought it was my eulogy. Not the case; I am very much alive and kicking!
Love to all,
Sandra

Thank YOU! Thank YOU! Thank YOU! I am thrilled to tell you that the DAY the April issue of Front Porch came out with Sonia's picture and the story of how we knew her, a family in Hartwood called and is in the process to bring her home! She may never know the pivotal role that you both played in helping her come home to Stafford, but I do. I want to thank you from the bottom of my heart -- which has ached for so long over her. You not only healed it, but I have felt like my heart has wings since I received that call. The waiting for her arrival will be difficult, but I have peace in my heart just knowing that now she has hope, and a family.

Once a Fredericksburger, always one, even 3000 miles away. Thanks to one of my high school buddies for putting me on to your great site. Can't wait to see what comes next--am always interested in knowing what's happening, historically, at home. And how things are changing when they do.

I know because the author is my dear friend and I've suffered through much anguish with her getting it published and out to the public. To be understood is one of the greatest gifts--hope many more people read it and appreciate it.

I'm a former Fredericksburgian, getting my Ph.D. in marketing in the marketing capital of the universe - Manhattan - and got a lump in my throat reading about places so near and dear to me. Keep up the good work and you'll be an unqualified success (and that's my professional opinion, by the way). After all, Famam Extendimus Factis. Keep safe.
