March 2010 SCENE & HEARD
By Megan Byrnes [For the S&H e-zine edition -- with photos! Go to HOME, click on cover photo, select this month's PDF] Welcome wagon! I’m not sure how they did it, but Kate Hopper and Franklin Daniels got primo positioning for their antique wares at the Big Flea last month. The pair had cuff links (I’m sure FD, the consummate Southern gentleman, knows a thing or two about good cufflinks), an olive oil curing vat and some lovely china set up right beyond the doors of the Convention Center. Also seen perusing the market, local craftsman and carpenter Mark Moyers; he has arguably the best antique eye in town, so it’d be wise to follow him around the next time you see him at a similar event! With the arrival of March comes the arrival of the spring, and just before the arrival of spring, came the (long anticipated) arrival of Mason Poe. Congratulations Ashley and Ryan (we can’t wait to see what talents your little boy brings – coming from that artistic couple – watch out)! Seen: Jamie and Amelia Soper enjoying catching up with friends at Hyperion. Also seen at Hyperion – Knit Night (yes, it deserves Capitalization) has become the thing to do on Thursdays. Anna Shumaker, Claire Ellinger, Rebecca Snyder, Alex Capshaw-Taylor, Heather Metzger Ablondi (to name just a few talented ladies) have been crafting it up, mocha in hand, like nobody’s business. Happy birthdays go out to Wade Troung, Drew Fristoe, Candis Wenger, and Sissy Nelson. Sissy gets to celebrate doubly - she shared her birthday with Valentine’s Day. How lucky to always have fancy prixe free menus wherever you go on your birthday. Scene: The ever elusive but ever enjoyable Benjamin and Yasmin Walker having a cocktail with friends on a Saturday evening at Bistro. Lauren and Chris Parks were also spotted enjoying some alone time together that night – guess it was a night for the constantly working to take a (much deserved!) break. Read? Paul Cymrot has been eyed coming and going at the old Echelon space. What better way to beat the competition than to be the competition? Spotted: Rob Hodge, of Confederates in the Attic fame, was in town last month while working on a photo shoot nearby. You may recognize him by the beard and uh, confederate clothing. Guess there’s not much room for inconspicuousness when you’re a war re-enactor. Fredericksburg All Ages (FAA) put together one of the most energetic, positive shows I’ve seen in a long time. The show featured The Bassic Needs, Prabir/Goldrush, The Like Whatevers, and the omnipresent Elby Brass. Nathan Masters was instrumental (get it?) in both The Like Whatevers and Elby Brass – he plays saxophone in both bands. UMW student, and the best sitting-down-dancer I’ve ever seen, Sam Protich, knew how to keep the crowd entertained and his red hair rockin. I have just overdosed on coolness, and all I’ve done is look at a photo of a newborn baby. Can we please talk about how utterly adorable, awesome and badass it is that this newborn baby already has a faux hawk? Xaven Cody J Schmitz (yes, his name is Xaven – told you about the cool overdose) is seen here in his dad, Jay’s, arms (yes, daddy has fully tattooed arms (have you overdosed on the coolness yet?). Momma Wendy says she has been spending her days in “sleep deprivation and bliss”. Bliss, indeed. What a refreshingly hip family!
